What Qualifies Me To Be A Watchman For The Christian Church?
Recently a Christian asked me this question, "What qualifies you to be a watchman for the Christian Church?" And, "What organization do you belong to?" I have long ago vowed to never defend myself against gossip, slander, etc., based on the Sermon on the Mount when Jesus told us to turn the other cheek when it comes to personal insults.
This issue however is not a personal insult, in fact, I believe that it can be used for a learning experience to young Christians as they struggle with man's wisdom and methods that would sidetrack them from God's will in their Christian walk.
I believe the Bible is abundantly clear that God, "Does not call the qualified, He qualifies the called." God's qualification process does not necesarily include seminary training. Nonetheless, I will give you my qualifications: I am; poor, foolish, despised, base, empty, a zero with the edges rubbed off, a dried up creek, an empty flour barrel, and a simple earthen vessel. Those are my qualifications, I have nothing to offer God. I am not trusting in talents, degrees, or organizations. I simply am an earthen vessel that pours out to others as God pours into me. Why is this? The Bible says,"That no flesh should glory in his presence." 1 Corinthians 1:29
When Jesus chose His twelve apostles what organizations did He gather them from? What were their qualifications? Did he get the top Rabbis' of the day? Did Jesus gather his disciples from the; Pharisees, Saducees, Scribes, or the students of the great Rabbi Gamaliel? No, Jesus chose plain and simple men with no formal training from man's religious establishments.
One evangelical leader states it very well:
"Satan may even attempt to convince us that our shortcomings render us useless to God and to His church. But Christ's choice of the apostles testifies to the fact that God can use the unworthy and the unqualified. He can use nobodies. They turned the world upside down, these twelve (Acts 17:6). It was not because they had extraordinary talents, unusual intellectual abilities, powerful political influence, or some special social status. They turned the world upside down because God worked in them to do it.
God chooses the humble, the lowly, the meek, and the weak so that there's never any question about the source of power when their lives change the world. It's not the man; it's the truth of God and the power of God in the man. (We need to remind some preachers today of this. It's not their cleverness, or their personalities. The power is in the Word--the truth that we preach--not in us.) And apart from one Person--one extraordinary human being who was God's Son incarnate, the Lord Jesus Christ--the history of God's work on earth is the story of His using the unworthy and molding them for his use the same careful way a potter fashions clay. The twelve were no exception to that.
God's favorite instruments are nobodies, so that no man can boast before God. In other words, God chooses whom He chooses in order that He might recieve the glory. He chooses weak instruments so that no one will attribute the power to human instruments rather than to God, who wields those instruments. Such a strategy is unacceptable to those whose whole pursuit in life is aimed toward the goal of human glory."
Another Evangelical leader says:
"Having begun in the Spirit, if you're going to try to be made perfect in the flesh, you're only going to hinder what God has done and wants to do. The only way is to continue in the Spirit. Having begun in the Spirit, let us continue in the Spirit!
That's why God chooses such totally unqualified people like us, fills us with His Spirit, and then does a mighty work through us that astounds and baffles the world. Now, how can we be so foolish as to try to find some reason in us to explain why God used us so that we might glory in ourselves rather than glorying in the Lord and in what He has done?
Paul writing to the Corinthians said, "For who maketh thee to differ from another? And what hast thou that thou didst not receive? Now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?" 1 Corinthians 4:7.
So what do you have more than anybody else? Whatever you have, you've received it as a gift from God. If you have received it, then why do you glory as though you didn't, as though you are something special?"
As I was pondering the question about being qualified I thought of a scenerio that is similar to the one I find myself in. Let's go back 2800 years, we live in a walled city with watchman posted to warn the city of attacks from our enemies.
There is a simple, young, and foolish boy who grasps his shofar that his dad made for him. The young boy cannot sleep, so he goes on his roof to observe the watchman. This is one of his favorite pastimes, besides of course playing with his dad. To his amazement the watchman are asleep, he cannot believe it!
People's lives our in the balance yet they apparently do not care about them, they are more concerend with their carnal desires. He observes the sleeping watchman for hours in bewilderment, wondering if he should wake his father. The boy reconsiders knowing how his dad hates to be bothered when he is asleep.
Suddenly movement at the city gate catches his eye, there are intruders scaling the walls making their way into the city to pillage and destroy. What should this foolish child do? Should he blow his shofar to warn the city? Or should he keep silent since he is not qualified to do so? Since he is not a member of the watchman guild and he was not trained according to their standards?
I believe it is the duty of this foolish child to warn the city seeing that the watchman are asleep. I also believe that the true inhabitants of this city would be thankful for this. The spies of the enemy would certainly be angry at this foolish boy, demanding, "What right do you have to sound the alarm?"
Therefore, being a foolish child, I will sound the alarm seeing that the majority of our christian leaders are apparently unaware that the sheep are being ravaged day after day by these savage wolves. I will have to stand before God when my life is over, not man.
The Master was searching for a vessel to use; On the shelf there were many - which one would He choose? "Take me," cried the gold one, "I'm shiny and bright, I'm of great value and I do things just right. My beauty and luster will outshine the rest, And for someone like You, Master, gold would be the best!"
The Master passed on with no word at all; He looked at a silver urn, narrow and tall; "I'll serve You, dear Master, I'll pour out Your drink, and I'll be at Your table whenever You dine, My lines are so graceful, my carvings so true, And my silver will always compliment You."
Unheeding the Master passed on to the brass, It was wide mouthed and shallow, and polished like glass. "Here! Here!" cried the vessel, "I know I will do, Place me on Your table for all men to view."
"Look at me," called the goblet of crystal so clear, "My transparency shows my contents so dear, Though fragile am I, I will serve You with pride, And I'm sure I'll be happy in Your house to abide."
The Master came next to a vessel of wood, Polished and carved, it solidly stood. "You may use me, dear Master," the wooden bowl said, "But I'd rather You used me for fruit, not for Bread!"
Then the Master looked down and saw a vessel of clay. Empty and broken it helplessly lay. No hope had the vessel that the Master might choose, To cleanse and make whole, to fill and to use.
"Ah! This is the vessel I've been hoping to find, I will mend and use it and make it all Mine, I need not the vessel with pride of its self; Nor the one who is narrow to sit on the shelf; Nor the one who is big mouthed and shallow and loud; Nor one who displays his contents so proud; Not the one who thinks he can do all things just right; But this plain earthy vessel filled with My power and might."
Then gently He lifted the vessel of clay, Mended and cleansed it and filled it that day. Spoke to it kindly, "There's work you must do, Just pour out to others as I pour into you."
"But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us."

2 Samuel 2:12-17

He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul. But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand. So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me. When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul. Therefore, O thou son of man, speak unto the house of Israel; Thus ye speak, saying, If our transgressions and our sins be upon us, and we pine away in them, how should we then live? Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth. When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it. Again, when I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right; If the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die. None of his sins that he hath committed shall be mentioned unto him: he hath done that which is lawful and right; he shall surely live. Yet the children of thy people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal. When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall even die thereby. But if the wicked turn from his wickedness, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby. Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O ye house of Israel, I will judge you every one after his ways. And it came to pass in the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, in the fifth day of the month, that one that had escaped out of Jerusalem came unto me, saying, The city is smitten. Now the hand of the LORD was upon me in the evening, afore he that was escaped came; and had opened my mouth, until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no more dumb. Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, they that inhabit those wastes of the land of Israel speak, saying, Abraham was one, and he inherited the land: but we are many; the land is given us for inheritance. And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not. And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them."
"And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto the shepherds; Woe be to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves! should not the shepherds feed the flocks? Ye eat the fat, and ye clothe you with the wool, ye kill them that are fed: but ye feed not the flock. The diseased have ye not strengthened, neither have ye healed that which was sick, neither have ye bound up that which was broken, neither have ye brought again that which was driven away, neither have ye sought that which was lost; but with force and with cruelty have ye ruled them. And they were scattered, because there is no shepherd: and they became meat to all the beasts of the field, when they were scattered.
