The Sea Creature that Swallowed Jonah in the Bible

Many unbelievers scoff at the notion of Jonah and a sea creature being large enough to swallow a man.  Recently some amazing pictures surfaced of a Whale Shark that almost swallowed a diver while he was filming them. (Link to amazing pictures of a Whale Shark)

"Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights," Jonah 1:17.

First of all, people claim the Bible calls the creature that swallowed Jonah whole a "whale" or "fish" which is true, but it is a mistranslation. The word translated "whale" or "fish" literally means sea monster.  The Bible in its original language claims a sea monster swallowed Jonah.  If you lived 2,800 years ago what would you call the creature pictured above?

Just so you don't believe this is something new influenced by a recent picture, I have always believed a Whale Shark swallowed Jonah because that's what my Bible says in the notes.  I have a Scofield Study Bible with a printing date of 1967 and on page 942 in the book of Jonah it claims a Whale Shark probably swallowed Jonah:

"No other miracle of Scripture has called forth so much unbelief.  It has been claimed that a whale could not swallow a man, yet types of whales have been found that could easily do so.  However, the word used here, like the one in Matthew 12:40 where the word is mistranslated, does not mean whale but sea monster, possibly the Whale Shark...," Scofield Study Bible notes, 1967.

Jesus claimed Jonah was a historical person and He would also die like Jonah and be raised from the dead after three days.

"Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, 'Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.'  But He answered and said to them, 'An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.  For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.  The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here,'" Matthew 12:38-42.
