The Deadliest Catch Episode aired on the Discovery Channel Concerning Statements Made by Captain Johnathan Hillstrand of the Time Bandit.

The Deadliest Catch intrigued me because I have spent about a year of my life on a ship in the Bering Sea.  I have been to Dutch Harbor a few times and in the very same water and storms that are depicted on that show.  I have even witnessed a dead body of a man who died while sailing in the Bering Sea.

During the 2009 King Crab Season Captain Johnathan Hillstrand of the Time Bandit made a statement twice during the same show which I found very insulting.  Johnathan (John) Hillstrand stated, "Do you know the difference between God and a captain?  Even God knows that He is not a captain."

God is the Sovereign King of kings and Lord of lords and the Captain of our salvation!  A mere man who is a captain of a little fishing vessel has no authority whatsoever over God.  You are under God's absolute sovereign kingship and you should be thanking him for preserving your life all of these years on the deadly Bering Sea instead of insulting His authority in front of millions of people.

Here is a scripture concerning God's sovereignty over any captain aboard any ship in the vast ocean:

"Whatever the LORD pleases He does, In heaven and in earth,
In the seas and in all deep places,"
Psalm 135:6

In the book of Daniel chapter 4:30-37 there is a fitting story about King Nebuchadnezzar when he did not give God the glory:

"The king spoke, saying, “Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honor of my majesty?”

While the word was still in the king’s mouth, a voice fell from heaven: “King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: the kingdom has departed from you!  And they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. They shall make you eat grass like oxen; and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses.

That very hour the word was fulfilled concerning Nebuchadnezzar; he was driven from men and ate grass like oxen; his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair had grown like eagles’ feathers and his nails like birds’ claws.

(Nebuchadnezzar Praises God)

And at the end of the time I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me; and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever:

For His dominion is an everlasting dominion,
And His kingdom is from generation to generation.
     All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing;
He does according to His will in the army of heaven
And among the inhabitants of the earth.
No one can restrain His hand
Or say to Him, “What have You done?”

At the same time my reason returned to me, and for the glory of my kingdom, my honor and splendor returned to me. My counselors and nobles resorted to me, I was restored to my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added to me.  Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, all of whose works are truth, and His ways justice. And those who walk in pride He is able to put down,"
Daniel 4:30-37.

To clear some things up, God is a Captain!  God is the Captain of our salvation:

"For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings,"
Hebrews 2:10.

God is the Sovereign King of kings:

"Which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen,"
1 Timothy 6:15-16.

God has Dominion over everybody on the face of the Earth:

"Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, The power and the glory, The victory and the majesty; For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, And You are exalted as head over all.  Both riches and honor come from You, And You reign over all.  In Your hand is power and might; In Your hand it is to make great And to give strength to all.  “Now therefore, our God, We thank You And praise Your glorious name,"
1 Chronicles 29:11-13.

Update:

July 2012 during a show Johnathan Hillstrand was on the Time Bandit and he jumped in celebration and hurt his back severely.  He was in so much pain that he declined to sail with the ship when they left port during a very bad storm.

A few weeks later during an "After The Catch" episode it was revealed that Johnathan Hillstrand broke four of his ribs while trying to ride a steer.  He also punctured a lung and he needed the aid of an oxygen breathing apparatus during a segment of the show.

One thing that I have learned in my life, when I get a little big for my britches God always finds a way to bring me down a few notches.  I have learned the hard way that being proud will get you some extra attention from God that you do not want.

God's Word is true:

"Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.  Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud," Proverbs 16:18-19.
"Whatever the LORD pleases He does, In heaven and in earth, In the seas and in all deep places,"
Psalm 135:6
"Which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen,"
1 Timothy 6:15-16.
"And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?"
Daniel 4:35.
